Visitor, User, and Inventory Figures for 2020
The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz regularly publishes up-to-date figures on visitors, users, and holdings at its institutions. This overview provides insights into the development of the museums, libraries, and archives, as well as into the use of their collections and services.
The figures for the years up to 2016 can be found in the materials for the annual press conference. Since 2016, they have been published in the annual report of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
The Institute for Museum Research at the State Museums of Berlin examines visitor numbers and visitor demographics at museums and exhibition venues throughout Germany every year. The “Comprehensive Statistical Survey of Museums in the Federal Republic of Germany” is regularly published at the end of the following year and has been released by the Institute in cooperation with the German Museum Association since 1981.

Statistics on visitor numbers for the institutions of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz are now available for the year 2025. They show the usage of the museums, libraries, and archives and provide an overview of trends over the past year.

Figures for 2024
Staatliche Museen zu Berlin und Musikinstrumenten-Museum
The museums of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin und Musikinstrumenten-Museum) recorded nearly 3.7 million visits in 2024 (2023: 4,380,071; 2022: 3,595,095; 2021: 1,475,542; 2020: 1,163,800; 2019: 4,288,000 visits). Museum Island in Berlin accounted for 1,862,918 of the total visits in 2024 (2023: 2,573,641; 2022: 2,216,602; 2021: 832,235; 2020: 739,380; 2019: 3,095 visits).

The number of library visits in 2024 was 909,201 (2023: 898,385; 2022: 813,943; 2021 under COVID-19 conditions: 221,432; 2020: 305,486, 2019: 959,472 visits). The number of users with a valid library card was 57,425. A total of 1,146,799 physical items were checked out.
The collection of books, bound newspapers, and periodicals has grown to 12,312,402. The library’s collection also includes approximately 1.9 million other printed works (maps, sheet music, etc.), 454,677 manuscripts and autographs, as well as 10,547 printed journals with ongoing subscriptions, in addition to 42,325 electronic journals and 1.4 million digital items.
Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut
In 2024, the library of the Ibero-Amerikanischen Instituts had 3,623 registered users. Sixty-five visiting scholars came to the institute through the IAI’s scholarship and fellowship program, among other initiatives. Events at the institute recorded approximately 3,756 visits (both digital and in-person).
The collection of printed monographs grew to 1,231,524 books in 2024. The extensive special collections consist of approximately 332 estates, 64,370 audio recordings, a film collection with over 7,420 videos and DVDs, about 76,160 maps, over 216,300 photographs, slides, and postcards, 5,730 posters, 2,760 prints, 350,000 newspaper clippings, and 19 archives from institutions such as working groups, research institutions, schools, foundations, associations, and publishers.
Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz
In 2024, 45,709 archival items were made available for use, and 4,346 written inquiries were answered. Approximately 1,109 users visited the archive in person, and 4,066 visitor days were recorded.
Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung
The Musikinstrumenten-Museum des Staatlichen Instituts für Musikforschung recorded 41,627 visits in 2024 (2023: 42,631; 2022: approximately 41,000 visits; 2021: 11,945 visits; 2020: approximately 16,000; 2019: approx. 53,000). This visitor count is included in the total number of visits to the SPK museums. The Bibliography of Music Literature (BMS Online) recorded 767,264 hits (2023: 730,369; 2022: 712,657; 2021: 698,992; 2020: 864,272; 2019: 961,500). The BMS currently contains 484,292 records.
The collections of the Staatlichen Instituts für Musikforschung comprise 3,819 museum objects in storage and under curatorial care, 60,599 books, sheet music, and bound newspapers, 210 current periodicals and e-journals, 979 music manuscripts, estates, and collections, as well as 23,000 image and sound recordings.
