Restoration Day at the SPK on 19 October 2025

Press release from 09/30/2025

The European Restoration Day will take place for the eighth time on 19 October 2025. The SPK institutions will also be offering exclusive insights into studios and exhibitions

Around 130 conservators work at the SPK to preserve the most valuable cultural assets - mostly behind the scenes. On Restoration Day, their enormous expertise and passion for their work will be on display at various events. In the restoration studios of the Gemäldegalerie, the Kupferstichkabinett, the Kunstbibliothek, the Hamburger Bahnhof or the Humboldtforum, visitors can take a look behind the scenes of museum work with experts. The Musical Instrument Museum and the State Library also offer guided tours of their workshops, for example on the preservation of instruments for future generations or on manuscripts on unusual materials such as palm leaf or birch bark.

"Restoration is a key area of expertise at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, as it is an indispensable field of work and research without which museum institutions could hardly exist. With passion and expertise, conservators preserve the past for the future. It's great that this day shines a well-deserved spotlight on their work," says SPK President Marion Ackermann.

The museums, libraries and archives of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation preserve world cultural heritage from the beginning of human history to the present day. The responsibility for preserving these art and cultural assets lies in the hands of specialised conservators. They ensure suitable conditions for storage, transport, use and exhibition, research the materials and production techniques of cultural artefacts, develop suitable conservation and restoration methods and apply them.

19 October 2025 offers a rare opportunity to get to know this important field of work in institutions that preserve cultural assets.
