Argentine LELOIR Prize for Barbara Göbel, Director of the Ibero-American Institute

Press release from 04/20/2022

On 19 April 2022, the RAICES and LELOIR prizes were awarded in Buenos Aires to four Argentinian and three international scholars. Barbara Göbel, Director of the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), is one of this year's winners of the LELOIR Prize.

The Premio LELOIR, named after the Argentinian biochemist and 1970 Nobel Prize winner Luis Federico Leloir, is awarded to foreign scientists and researchers for their contribution to strengthening and internationalising science and technology in Argentina. In his laudatory speech, Argentinian Ambassador to Germany Pedro Villagra Delgado paid particular tribute to Barbara Göbel's commitment to building networks of equal scientific cooperation that link different knowledge, expertise, disciplines and institutions. Barbara Göbel accepted the LELOIR Prize, which was awarded for the tenth time this year, from the Argentinian Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero and the Argentinian Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Daniel Filmus at the Palacio San Martín.

SPK President Hermann Parzinger: "The award emphasises the international visibility and appreciation of the work of the Ibero-American Institute and its director. The award is a great honour for Barbara Göbel's research achievements. It has also considerably strengthened the IAI's bridging function in German-Argentinean academic relations. At the same time, this recognition provides an important impetus for the internationalisation of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation."

Barbara Göbel: "This award means a lot to me. It reflects my close personal and academic ties to Argentina. Above all, however, it strengthens transnational cooperation and networking, in which public academic institutions act as hubs for the joint production and circulation of knowledge."

Prof Dr Barbara Göbel has been Director of the IAI since 2005, Honorary Professor at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin since 2017 and Principal Investigator of the international research college Mecila (2020-2026), funded by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research and based in São Paulo. Her research focuses on socio-ecological inequalities and knowledge asymmetries.

The Ibero-American Institute (IAI) is a non-university institution in the humanities, cultural and social sciences with a regional focus on Latin America, Spain, Portugal and the Caribbean as well as transregional interdependencies. The IAI has one of the world's largest libraries and special collections on these regions. The combination of information, research and cultural centre and its international orientation characterise the profile of the IAI. Since 1962, the Institute has been an institution of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK). With its museums, libraries, archives and research facilities, the SPK is one of the largest cultural and scientific institutions in the world.
