Lowtech - Sustainable solutions sought at SPK

Press release from 01/27/2022

Competition announced for the basic renovation and expansion of the plaster moulding shop

On 25 January 2022, the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, on behalf of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, announced the competition for the basic restoration and extension of the plaster moulding shop of the National Museums in Berlin. The aim of this competition is to find a sustainable, functionally and architecturally convincing preliminary design and a suitable team of architects.

The Gipsformerei of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is not only a highly productive manufactory, but also houses a large collection of historical moulds and master models based on art and cultural artefacts from all periods and geographical areas. Its mould workshop, painters' studios and storage rooms are located in a purpose-built building constructed between 1889 and 1891 in Sophie-Charlotten-Straße in Berlin-Charlottenburg. In the coming years, the existing building is to be completely renovated and extended by a new building in order to meet the increasing space requirements for the moulds and the historical collection. The overall ensemble is intended to create a future-oriented production and storage building that optimises work processes, allows potential for content development and increases the public presence and perception of the Gipsformerei.

Special demands are placed on sustainable and resource-efficient construction. In addition to the energy standard set by the federal government for the old and new buildings, the new building is to be certified to at least the silver quality level with a minimum fulfilment level of 65 percent of the Sustainable Building Rating System (BNB). A similar application of the BNB is planned for the listed old building. The building project is also to be planned according to the low-tech principle, which favours robust, low-maintenance structural solutions over technically sophisticated solutions.

The procedure will be carried out as an open, two-phase, anonymous planning competition. In the first phase, basic solutions for the building concept in terms of the low-tech approach, the urban cubature and the organisation of use will be developed. Based on the competition entries submitted in the first phase, the jury will select 15-20 solutions for more in-depth work in the second phase.

The submission deadline for the first phase is 5 April 2022.
