The Weimar Classical Foundation is appearing for the third time at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation with its ‘Weimar Room’
Press release from 06/30/2026
A travelling exhibition marking the themed years ‘Opening’ and ‘Feminine Weimar’ is on display at the James Simon Gallery on Berlin’s Museum Island until the end of the year.
The Weimar Classic Foundation is once again showcasing its upcoming thematic focus in Berlin. The ‘Weimar Room’ was opened on 30 June with an event at the James Simon Gallery on Museum Island, organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) and the Weimar Classic Foundation (KSW) in collaboration with the Free State of Thuringia’s Representative Office to the Federal Government. This marks the third time that Germany’s second-largest cultural foundation has been a guest at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation with its mobile branch.
Under the title ‘New Developments in the Women’s Plan – A Discussion’, the President of the Weimar Classicism Foundation, Ulrike Lorenz, the Director of the Alte Nationalgalerie, Anette Hüsch, and Stefanie Freyer, Deputy Head of the Research Department at the Weimar Classicism Foundation, discussed how engaging with women in the Classical, Modern and Contemporary periods enables a fresh perspective on the cultural city, its history and its self-image.
With the opening of the east wing of Weimar City Palace in October 2026 and the new permanent exhibition on Weimar Classicism, the Weimar Classicism Foundation is already preparing for its themed years in 2027 and 2028. Together with Weimar GmbH and cultural partners across Weimar, it is offering a multifaceted programme under the umbrella brand ‘Weiblich Weimar’ (Feminine Weimar), focusing on significant female figures from the Goethe era, the modern era and the present day.
The “Weimar Room” focuses on the planned exhibitions and dialogue formats for the upcoming “Weiblich Weimar” themed years, which invite visitors to discover the stories of the women who have had a decisive influence on Weimar for more than 250 years.
Stefan Gruhner, Head of the State Chancellery and Thuringian Minister for Federal and European Affairs, Sport and Volunteering, and Gero Dimter, Vice-President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, emphasised in their welcoming addresses the importance of cooperation between the two major cultural foundations.
“Where women are absent, half the perspective is missing. That is why it is of central importance that the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, as one of Germany’s most significant cultural foundations, places greater focus on the women who have shaped our cultural history. The Weimar Room once again serves as a showcase for Thuringia’s cultural influence in the federal capital and, not least, as an invitation: to Weimar, the Green Heart of Germany,” emphasised Stefan Gruhner, Head of the Thuringian State Chancellery and Thuringian Minister for Federal and European Affairs, Sport and Voluntary Work.
Gero Dimter, Vice-President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, said: “The ‘Weimar Room’ is a showcase for the fascinating, inspiring and vibrant world of the Weimar Classic Foundation and has now become a fixture in our calendar of events. It exemplifies our federal solidarity and a successful collaboration between Germany’s largest multidisciplinary institutions. We are delighted to offer the Weimar Classic Foundation a platform on which it can present its projects for the coming themed years to a nationwide audience.”
“With the opening of the east wing of Weimar City Palace and our new permanent exhibition on Weimar Classicism, we are launching our ‘Feminine Weimar’ themed years. Together with our cultural partners, we are turning our attention to women who have shaped culture and society from the Goethe era through the modern period to the present day. With the ‘Weimar Room’, we aim to offer a glimpse of the planned exhibitions, experiments and debates right now, and to inspire people to visit Weimar and engage with new female perspectives,” emphasised Ulrike Lorenz, President of the Weimar Classic Foundation.
The ‘Weimarer Zimmer’ can be visited at the James-Simon-Galerie until the end of 2026.
The “Feminine Weimar” themed years organised by the Weimar Classic Foundation are held under the patronage of Karin Prien, Federal Minister for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth of the Federal Republic of Germany.
