Symposium on cultural and political education in museums – Perspectives on the Beutelsbach Consensus
Press release from 04/07/2026
Fifty years ago, three key guiding principles of political education were formulated in Beutelsbach, Baden-Württemberg. To this day, this so-called Beutelsbach Consensus serves as the foundation and guiding framework for political education work. To mark the anniversary, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg, is organising a two-day symposium focusing on how these principles are interpreted today, including in relation to cultural education.
Keynote speeches and panel discussions will address, amongst other things, the role played by the Beutelsbach Consensus today at the intersection of political and cultural education; how cultural and historical-political education can be meaningfully combined against the backdrop of current social issues; and the differing perspectives held by cultural and civil society actors in East and West Germany regarding the Beutelsbach Consensus.
We cordially invite you to the symposium
