There are only a few days left before a whole weekend of celebrations on the "island" and in the museums!
SPK President Hermann Parzinger: "On my last day in office, one of the biggest events the foundation has ever organised will take place. The Museum Island can be rediscovered by Berliners and guests of our city, there is a great programme and it is ultimately a cultural festival for the whole city. Above all, I would also like to thank the Berlin theatres, who will be congratulating us in their own way. And I would like to thank all our partners, without whom this festival would not be possible: Flix, Lotto Berlin, VisitBerlin and the Kuratorium Preußischer Kulturbesitz."
And Marion Ackermann, President-designate of the SPK, emphasises: "I am delighted that I can begin my term of office with this brilliant anniversary programme. The anniversary harbours great opportunities. We have the opportunity to illuminate the Museum Island from all sides. To me, the island is like a little piece of Venice in Berlin. And it is simply a great story of how this place has grown over the centuries. We will use the anniversary to convey the stories in a new way for younger generations and bring them to life."
Daily programme - open-air stage, open-air studio, drop-in offers
Numerous events at the island festival take place free of charge and outdoors. An open-air stage will be set up in the Kolonnadenhof between the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie. There, Berlin theatres and others will serenade the "island" with their very special performances.
The Operndolmuş - the Komische Oper 's musical shared taxi - brings contemporary musical theatre directly to the neighbourhoods and will also be stopping off in the Kolonnadenhof on Friday under the motto "Hadi Bakalım - Let's go!" Station. The Volksbühne also has an international flavour, sending two choirs to the island: Afrikan Voices and Bulgarian Voices Berlin combine authentic arrangements and modern interpretations that reflect the musical diversity of Bulgaria - dancing, rousing, melancholic and heartfelt. The Berlinensemble' s dance orchestra will present a varied live programme of well-known pop songs on Sunday. With "METAMORPHOSE" , the Deutsches Theater is bringing its participatory section to the "Insel". Inspired by motifs from Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", DT Jung* presents an open-air dance theatre performance with Afro-diasporic dance styles and hip hop. The second act is "GROSSE GEWINNE SCHWERE VERLUSTE" - a music theatre evening that explores different orientations towards the future. Discussions with the directors of the Museum Island will take place between the guest performances.
UNESCO World Heritage Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 1 June. The new SPK President Marion Ackermann, Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer and the new Berlin Senator for Culture Sarah Wedl-Wilson will speak at the ceremony at 11.00 am. Guests will include the Musikkindergarten Berlin, initiated by Daniel Barenboim.
Almost 70 free guided tours throughout the weekend will provide insights into the history, architecture and unique collections of the Museum Island. With surprise tours, you won't find out where you're actually going until the start. A wide variety of workshops and drop-in offers for all age groups in the museums, under the colonnades and in Haus Bastian - Centre for Cultural Education complete the programme. The Food Court will provide refreshments during the day.
Evening programme - concerts by Patrice and Jazzanova, parties in the James-Simon-Galerie and under the colonnades
Two concerts are also among the highlights of the island festival: on Friday evening at 20:00, Patrice will be playing in the colonnade courtyard. Patrice is a cross-genre singer, songwriter and producer. His debut album "Ancient Spirit" was released 25 years ago - a milestone between roots reggae, soul and hip-hop and the most successful album of its genre in Europe at the time. Since then, he has been shaping the international music scene with depth, energy and vision. "Ancient Spirit" remains a manifesto for identity, freedom and change.
One day later, on Saturday at 5.45 pm, Jazzanova will be our guest. They will bring their groundbreaking debut album "In Between" to the stage as a rousing live version - together with future soul voice Wayne Snow. The Jazzanova Live Band combines samples and live music to create a unique soundscape of jazz, soul and electronics. The show is based on the current live album "In Between Revisited" and promises an evening full of dynamics and musical time travel.
If you want to continue the party on Saturday evening, you don't need to leave the island. Under the motto "Life on the Island", SPK and Flix will transform the James-Simon-Galerie into a tropical-cultural event space from 22:00. The Berlin sound collective SWIM GOOD will be there, blurring the boundaries between club and culture with DJ Rejy, Hannah Parent, Shari Who, Sosa and the Bipolar Soundsystem. The traditional Kolonnaden Bar is also opening again. At one of the most beautiful locations in all of Berlin - on the edge of the historic Kolonnadenhof on the northern tip of Museum Island and directly on the Spree - there will be cool drinks and good music on all three evenings.
Matthias Wemhoff, spokesman for the Museum Island: "The island deserves a five-year programme for its anniversary! And the three-day island festival next week - what a fantastic start! We are delighted to be able to offer not only a great programme but also special admission prices. And then comes the island summer with last year's celebrated Kolonnaden Bar, which this year will be open for three months longer than ever before with a view of the Spree."
New film documentary celebrates its world premiere
A new ZDF/arte documentary about the Museum Island will be presented as a world premiere and with public screenings on Saturday and Sunday in the James-Simon-Galerie. The two-part documentary tells the story of the Museum Island and thus also 200 years of German history using nine top works.
