SPK Annual Report 2023 published: Focus on NS art theft

Press release from 07/05/2024

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation's institutions counted almost 4.5 million visitors in 2023. This success, which builds on the pre-corona period and is a great vote of confidence, is highlighted in the Annual Report 2023, which was published recently.

He also looks at the important events - such as the return of the Kogi masks to Colombia, the complete closure of the Pergamonmuseum for three years due to construction work and the grand finale of the Germany-wide joint project for digitisation, museum4punkt0. Not forgetting the milestones and measures that took place in 2023 in terms of reform - from the start of the work of the Interim Executive Board to intensified federal-state cooperation in state workshops and the development of the SPK 2030 strategy "We connect people, times and spaces".

An important part of the SPK's work is and remains provenance research, to which the discourse section of the Annual Report 2023 is dedicated. 25 years after the Washington Conference on Dealing with Nazi Art Theft, Carola Thielecke, Head of the Legal Department at the SPK, Petra Winter, Director of the Central Archive and Head of Provenance Research at the National Museums in Berlin, and Michaela Scheibe, Deputy Head of the Manuscripts and Historical Prints Department at the State Library and responsible for provenance research: What is being done in museums and libraries to restore justice? How is research being carried out to enable restitution?

Coordinator Anke Lünsmann also presents the BKM-funded remembrance project "Art, Looting, Restitution - Forgotten Life Stories", which the SPK initiated together with the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg and Bayerischer Rundfunk. It commemorates Jewish people who once greatly enriched the culture of this country and then became victims of Nazi terror.

The SPK Annual Report was once again designed by Andreas Dimmler, with editorial responsibility in the hands of Gesine Bahr and the SPK's Media, Communication and Events Department.
