Opportunity or burden? Reform of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation

Press release from 12/06/2023

Dossier on the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation published by Politik & Kultur

What does the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation do? And above all, what makes it special? Who and what belongs to it? Who wants to have a say in its future organisation? What is its history? Is the necessary transformation an opportunity or a burden? How is it being addressed? How digital is the foundation? Can the foundation be sustainable?

These and many other questions are answered in the newly published dossier "Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz", which is enclosed with Politik & Kultur, the newspaper of the German Cultural Council. On 88 pages, 41 authors analyse the history, the present and, above all, the future of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. It becomes clear that behind the very formal name lies a whole cosmos of institutions. Above all, it becomes clear which changes have already been initiated in recent years and which will be tackled in the near future.

The President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), Prof Dr Hermann Parzinger, said: "The new SPK will be a foundation of 25 autonomous and independent institutions. We are very grateful to the German Cultural Council that this dossier not only shows the diversity of the SPK's institutions, but also describes what a modern cultural foundation must achieve today."

The editor of Politik & Kultur and Managing Director of the German Cultural Council, Olaf Zimmermann, said: "The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation is the largest cultural organisation in Germany. The renewal of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation is not a matter for federal politics or the home state of Berlin alone. Making the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation fit for the future is a national task. This dossier aims to open up the debate on the future of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, to inform, problematise and encourage discussion."
