From 2020: Schinkel in the Friedrichswerder Church
Press release from 10/11/2019
Friedrichswerder Church reopens its doors - open days after years of renovation work - presentation of the Alte Nationalgalerie from next year
The renovation of the Friedrichswerder Church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel has been completed. From the second quarter of 2020, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation will once again use the church building as an exhibition space for the Alte Nationalgalerie, where it will present an internationally oriented exhibition on sculpture from Schinkel's time.
For around seven years, the church building could only be experienced from the outside because the construction of new buildings in the immediate neighbourhood caused serious damage to the church, which was built between 1824 and 1830 and extended from the floor to the ceiling. The neighbour, Bauwert AG, eventually stabilised the church building again to prevent further damage. The neighbouring building was also built lower by Bauwert AG in essential parts directly next to the western side windows in consideration of the incomparable illumination of the church interior than would have been permitted by the building plans.
The church building's suitability as a museum for sculptures has thus been fully restored. Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, thanks the parish in Friedrichstadt and the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia for their willingness to make the church building available to the National Museums in Berlin. The agreement is initially valid for at least five years. He emphasised: "The good cooperation between the parish and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation during the restoration period gives us hope that the church building can also be used as a museum and for church services in the long term."
