Intensification of bilateral science. Opening of the exhibition "Bronze Age - Europe without Borders" in Moscow
Press release from 10/08/2013
On 15 October 2013, the exhibition "Bronze Age - Europe without Borders" will open at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. The exhibition, which was previously shown in St. Petersburg and opened there by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Vladimir Putin, is a joint project of the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), the State Historical Museum (Moscow), the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow) and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of the National Museums in Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage. To mark the opening, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Berlin State Museums are organising an international conference on the Bronze Age at the State Historical Museum in Moscow.
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, says: "The exhibition project is the result of the trusting cooperation between German and Russian museum experts. Building on the successes to date, we will further intensify bilateral scientific cooperation and initiate new research projects."
The exhibition presents the cultural, social and religious developments in Bronze Age Europe using more than 1700 artefacts from all participating museums. Around a third of the exhibits are artefacts from the Berlin Museum of Prehistory and Early History that were taken to Russia due to the war. Many of them are on public display in the exhibition for the first time since the Second World War. At the international conference "The Bronze Age in Europe - Current Research and Perspectives", scientists from Russia, Germany and Denmark will present their research. In the final discussion, the results of the event will be summarised and perspectives for future research cooperation between German and Russian institutions in the field of ancient studies will be discussed. In addition to the opening of the exhibition, the event will mark the tenth anniversary of the DFG's Moscow office, which will be honoured with a ceremony.
