Germany's oldest music competition: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Prizes 2006 awarded

Press release from 01/17/2006

This highly regarded competition for young musicians is organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in cooperation with Germany's state music academies and is awarded to outstanding young musicians studying at German music academies in different subjects each year.

Frederic Belli (Hanover University of Music and Theatre) for trombone, Julian Arp (cello) and Caspar Frantz (piano) as a duo from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin are this year's prizewinners. The duo was also awarded the "Chamber Music Prize of the Freunde Junger Musiker e.V.". It was awarded for the first time as part of the competition. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, is delighted "that this civic initiative has focussed its activities in an exemplary manner and has strengthened the competition with a further prize. In addition, the foundation established the concert series "Finale Junge Meister" at the Corvey Music Weeks in 2005, where the prizewinners will present themselves to a discerning audience."

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation has awarded a sponsorship prize to 16-year-old Tomasz Daroch (cello) and his sister Maria (piano) from the Mannheim State University of Music and Performing Arts.

As part of the competition, the "Scholarship of the Federal President for the Promotion of Young Musicians" has also been awarded for many years. This year's winners were Nicolas Naudot (trombone, Freiburg i.Br. University of Music) and Tobias Bloos (cello) and Li-Chun Su (piano) from the Berlin University of the Arts.
