Museum of the 20th Century: Parzinger appoints advisory board
Press release from 11/29/2017
The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) has set up an advisory committee to support the planning of the Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum in Berlin - in agreement with the Chair of the Foundation Council, Minister of State Monika Grütters. This goes back to a suggestion made by the jury of the realisation competition in October last year. Foundation President Hermann Parzinger has appointed the following architects:
- - Arno Lederer as Chairman of the Board
- - Arno Brandlhuber
- - Andreas Hild
- - Hilde Léon
- - Regula Lüscher
- - Hans-Günter Merz
- Hermann Parzinger commented: "The expert committee will act as a neutral body - located at the interface between politics, the public, clients and the building authorities - to advise us on difficult issues and, if necessary, act as a mediator. It can also promote the communication of the project and take a moderating stance in the public discourse. I am very grateful to the members for their active support in all of this."
Minister of State Monika Grütters said: "I am delighted that we have been able to attract such a high-calibre advisory board to provide expert support for the new museum building at the Kulturforum and that Arno Lederer has agreed to chair it. The advisory committee is not an additional decision-making body; its purpose is to advise the client SPK, all parties involved in the construction and the interested public on questions of architecture and urban planning and to act as a mediator for this outstanding architectural project."
The Bundestag made budget funds available for the new building in November 2014. In October 2016, the design by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron was awarded first prize in a multi-stage competition. Since then, preparatory measures for the project have been underway. As part of the development plan process, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the St. Matthew's Foundation have agreed on a distance of 14 metres between St. Matthew's Church and the new museum. The distance to the Neue Nationalgalerie has also been increased so that the apses at the rear of St Matthew's Church can be seen from Potsdamer Strasse.
The first visible measures to be taken are the ground investigations, which will begin shortly. They will provide information on the properties of the subsoil relevant to construction and make it possible to predict the interaction between the soil, the groundwater and the planned building. The Landesbetrieb Bundesbau Baden-Württemberg, as the contracted construction management organisation, will manage the planning and execution of the entire construction project.
