The 8th International Day of Provenance Research will take place on 8 April 2026. On this day, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin will offer insights into the topics and work of provenance research within their museums and institutions.

A key feature of the event is the guided provenance walks (#Spurensuche), organised in cooperation with various Berlin cultural institutions. Following different routes through central Berlin, these walks offer insights into the work of provenance researchers whilst simultaneously revealing traces of Nazi rule and the fates of persecuted people and institutions within today’s urban landscape.

In addition, the programme includes guided tours and workshops on provenance research and collection history at the Bode Museum, the Gemäldegalerie, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Dahlem Research Campus. Topics covered include object biographies, collection histories and key questions in provenance research, for example in the context of Nazi-looted art and colonial contexts.

The programme is complemented by open discussion formats (‘Ask the Provenance Researchers’), which provide a space for questions and exchange.

Participation in many events is free of charge; for some events, participation fees plus admission apply. Advance registration is required for numerous events.

Provenance Research Day is an initiative of the Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung e.V., which brings together over 500 researchers and experts worldwide dedicated to researching the provenance of cultural assets.
