Press release from 06/16/2016
Competition documents to be sent out soon - Grütters: Design must be convincing in terms of urban planning and function - Parzinger: A lot of creativity and expertise for art - Submissions in mid-September
The realisation competition for the planned Museum of the 20th Century of the National Gallery at Berlin's Kulturforum has entered the final round. A total of 42 international teams of architects and landscape architects have been selected for the final. The finalists are made up of the ten winners of the ideas competition, 13 invited offices and 19 teams that qualified in the competition. They will receive the competition documents in June. The offices have until mid-September to submit their plans and models. The jury will meet at the end of October. The subject of the competition is the architectural design of a museum building for 20th century art as well as the open space planning of the immediate surroundings of the building.
Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters explained: "We have been able to attract really high-calibre architectural firms for this challenging construction task. These are the best prerequisites for a museum design that is convincing in terms of urban planning and function and can hold its own among the solitary buildings by Scharoun, Stüler and Mies van der Rohe. The great interest in the project shows that it is an attractive challenge for any renowned office to build in this neighbourhood. We expect exciting and bold designs that dare to restructure the Kulturforum without jeopardising the existing ensemble."
According to the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hermann Parzinger, "it must be possible to combine outstanding architectural and urban design with the requirements of a museum in the 21st century. I would like to see a building that makes a new statement at this location, but also has the necessary openness. We need a building without backsides, so to speak, to bind together what belongs together and to heal this disparate site. Today, however, the museum must also be a place for society, without art becoming a secondary consideration. On the contrary: the Nationalgalerie urgently needs this building, and we are delighted that there is a great deal of creativity and expertise for art among the finalists."
