Remembrance of the Israeli hostages: "The Yellow Piano" remains in the James Simon Gallery until 28 January

Press release from 01/12/2024

SPK President Parzinger: Cultural institutions must do more to combat the rise of anti-Semitism - Invitation to the piano in memory of the hostages

For 100 days, around 110 Israeli men, women and children have been held captive by the terrorist organisation Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Their situation and the worries of their relatives determine the daily lives of many families. Their suffering is almost unimaginable. Among the hostages is 22-year-old pianist Alon Ohel, who was kidnapped on 7 October during the Nova Music Festival near Kibbutz Re'im. His family wants to commemorate his fate and that of the more than 100 other hostages with the initiative "The Yellow Piano". A yellow piano is placed in public places and can and should be played by anyone who wants to support the campaign. This has already happened in the pedestrian zone of Tel Aviv and in the Tokyo underground.

From 14 to 28 January 2024, the instrument will be on display in the James-Simon-Galerie on Berlin's Museum Island after a kick-off concert with Igor Levit. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation is very happy to support the idea of the Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life and the Fight against Anti-Semitism, Felix Klein, and the World Jewish Congress.
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, says: "It was really a matter close to our hearts. We are horrified by the atrocious crimes committed by Hamas in Israel, by the unimaginable suffering in the many families. We hope with the relatives that the many Israeli men, women and children can finally be freed from their captivity. I am very concerned about the rise of anti-Semitism in society, including in the cultural sphere. If we as cultural institutions can achieve anything, it is two things: To promote knowledge and to strengthen judgement."
