A Royal Visit to Museum Island

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh and brother of King Charles III, visited Museum Island Berlin on 22 May
On May 22, a limousine pulled up next to the flight of steps in front of James-Simon-Galerie. Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and brother of King Charles III, stepped out to shake hands with Kai Wegner, the governing mayor of Berlin, and Gero Dimter, the vice president of the SPK. Also on hand to greet the royal visitor was his relative Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia. Prince Edward was there to present young Berliners with the “Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.” He became patron of the international award program following the death of Prince Philip, who had founded it in 1956. The purpose of the program is to help young people build personal responsibility by contributing to their communities and volunteering in schools, youth groups and charitable organizations. The program's motto – "There’s more in you than you think!" – goes back to Kurt Hahn, who had been Prince Philip’s headmaster at the School of Salem Castle and later at Gordonstoun in Scotland.
