Outstanding Wrap-Up to the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hochschulwettbewerb 2022

On January 16, 2022, awards were announced for the categories of piano and composition. The SPK congratulates the winners.

The Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Conservatory Competition for 2022 was held in the categories of piano and composition. The competition ended yesterday with a final concert co-presented by the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, conducted by Leslie Suganandarajah.

The first prize in the piano category and the prize awarded by the Friends of Young Musicians Germany (FJMD) both went to Jeonghwan Kim of the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. In the composition category, Zara Ali (Hochschule für Musik Detmold) won the first prize with behave. She likewise took the Special Prize for Composition  awarded by the Friends of Young Musicians Germany.

Other prizewinners in this year’s competition include Jiyoung Kim (piano, Federal President’s Prize), Jinhyung Park and Youngho Park (piano, Elsa Wera Arnold Foundation Prize), Kiloh Lee (composition, Federal President’s Prize), Marc L. Vogler and Dachan Kim (composition, Elsa Wera Arnold Foundation Prize). In the piano category, the Special Prize for the Best Interpretation of a Commissioned Work went to Matteo Weber (Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe), and the Ensemble ColLAB Cologne (Hochschule für Musik, Tanz und Theater Köln) won the Special Prize for the Interpretation of a Competition Entry.

The competition is organized by the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), the Rectors' Conference of German Conservatories, and Berlin University of the Arts. The artistic director is Sebastian Nordmann, director of the Konzerthaus Berlin. The patron of the competition is Andris Nelsons, music director of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
