News from 02/19/2021

The range of colonial goods is as diverse as their places of origin. The spring issue of the Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte traces the ups and downs of their history to the present day.

“Colonial goods have it all,” write the editors Ulrike Gleixner, Alexandra Kemmerer, Michael Matthiesen, together with SPK President Hermann Parzinger. “As Jürgen Osterhammel shows in the opening article of this special issue, the term eludes any simple attempt to define it.”

The magazine offers a variety of perspectives. There is a conversation with Sundhya Pahuja about “the state as a colonial commodity.” Jürgen Elvert writes on global networks of ports and Reinhard Wendt  on the “sugaring of the world.” David Armitage explores the influence of John Locke in the colonies. Other articles examine colonial barter in China and decolonialization in Latin America.

This issue of the magazine comes out on February 22, 2021. It is edited by Ulrike Gleixner, Alexandra Kemmerer, Michael Matthiesen and SPK President Hermann Parzinger.
