Digital conference museum4punkt0: Developing the future together
Press release from 10/27/2020
museum4punkt0 has been researching new ways of digital communication in museums for three years. As part of a digital conference on 27 and 28 October 2020, the association will present its findings and discuss current issues relating to digitality.
Minister of State Monika Grütters, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, will kick off the digital autumn conference:
"Apps, augmented reality or virtual reality - digital applications open up new access to the cultural riches of our museums. The current crisis has made it particularly clear that digital offerings can make culture attractive and tangible for many people. From the feeling of landing on the moon, to meeting creatures in the forest floor 'at eye level', to the cultural-historical dimension of Hans Holbein the Younger's painting 'The Merchant of Venice (correction 27 October 2020: The Merchant George Gisze)', world events come to life for everyone. This is much more than two-dimensional viewing. This not only inspires younger visitor groups for museums, but also opens up target groups that could not previously be reached in the traditional way. As part of the NEUSTART KULTUR programme, we are supporting the museum4punkt0 project with an additional 10 million euros. New experiences are worth every effort."
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, emphasises the importance of digitisation:
"Digitisation is the key to our cultural heritage. A good digital offering significantly expands our access to culture; as a result of the pandemic, it was even the only one at times. museum4punkt0 is making a decisive contribution here."
museum4punkt0 develops, tests, evaluates and publishes tools that can be integrated into the museum experience as digital building blocks. Digital technologies support the communication of content: Objects become tangible in virtual reality sequences, inaccessible living spaces open up. Augmented reality applications invite visitors to explore objects themselves or supplement personalised guided tours through exhibitions. Interactive portals offer personalised access and involve users as co-curators.
How can museums across Germany benefit from the applications developed in the project and our experiences? What influence did Covid-19 containment measures have on the development of digital mediation? What further steps do museums need to take on the road to digitalisation?
In addition to experts from the network, international colleagues will also comment on these key topics of digital mediation. Project managers present their sub-projects in short highlight films. In further film sequences and presentations, the network partners will provide information about the applications developed in museum4punkt0. Questions and comments from the digital conference audience in the chat will be taken up in discussion rounds.
