'Notturno' on 08.11. for the first time in the James-Simon-Galerie

Press release from 11/04/2019

A trio of the DSO plays works by Haydn, Gaubert, Weber and Kapustin

On 8 November, an ensemble from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) will continue the popular 'Notturno' concert series. For the first time, the venue will be the James-Simon-Galerie, the newly constructed entrance building to Museum Island. The programme includes works for the trio of flute, cello and piano by Haydn, Philippe Gaubert, Weber and Nikolai Kapustin. Before the concert, which begins at 10 pm, Prof Dr Friederike Seyfried, Director of the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection of the National Museums in Berlin, will welcome visitors at
at 9 pm. Afterwards, Alexander Schwarz, Partner and Design Director at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, will give a short introductory lecture on the creation of the building, and experienced mediators from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz will offer guided tours of the building. The event is already sold out.

The chamber concert series 'Notturno', which the DSO has been organising with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation since 2010, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season. Following the anniversary concert in September at the Neues Museum, the first regular 'Notturno' evening of the season will take place on 8 November. For the first time, the venue will be the James Simon Gallery, the entrance building to the Museum Island, which was designed by British star architect David Chipperfield and opened three months ago. There, a three-piece DSO ensemble - consisting of flautist Upama Muckensturm, cellist Leslie Riva-Ruppert and pianist SooJin Anjou - will perform trios from four centuries, from Haydn to Philippe Gaubert and Weber to the Ukrainian contemporary Nikolai Kapustin, who masterfully combines classical form with original jazz harmonies.

For ten years now, the DSO and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation have been delighting Berlin chamber music audiences with their 'Notturno' concert series at places of art and knowledge. The unique interplay of virtuoso chamber music in dialogue with extraordinary spaces and collections always creates diverse and inspiring art experiences. The next nocturnal chamber concert will take place in the panorama of the Pergamonmuseum am Kupfergraben designed by Yadegar Asisi on 6 March 2020.
