History to go: Secret State Archives PK will in future offer an "archive case" for school pupils
Press release from 09/05/2017
In order to familiarise pupils from year 9 onwards with the handling of historical source material, the Secret State Archives PK has developed an "archive case" with written examples from different eras in a three-year cooperation with the "Schule an der Haveldüne" in Berlin-Spandau. From September, it can be borrowed from the archive for history lessons.
The archive case contains a collection of faithful reproductions of various types of sources. The written examples cover historical periods from the Thirty Years' War to the 1848 Revolution and the First World War. The archive case also contains a glossary of archival terms, materials and information on handling files as well as an educational booklet with examples of writing and transcriptions.
The case was designed as part of the archive's cultural education programme. This service area has been in existence since 2013 and aims to arouse pupils' interest in history as an extracurricular place of learning. In line with the motto "Preserving archive material - researching history", the aim is to familiarise pupils with the independent research of the past and the critical handling of sources. The archive case corresponds to the framework curriculum for history.
Interested teachers and trainee teachers will be able to borrow a copy, including accompanying educational material, free of charge from September. In addition, a project day at the Secret State Archives PK is offered for pupils from year 9 onwards with an introduction to archive work and source-based work in the archive. Booking information can also be found on the Berlin-Brandenburg education server.
