"museum4punkt0": Sub-project XD - xplore Digital
Press release from 05/08/2017
Today sees the launch of "museum4punkt0 - Digital Strategies for the Museum of the Future". The National Museums in Berlin are involved with the sub-project "XD - xplore Digital".
The National Museums in Berlin are part of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. With their collections and research institutes, they form a universal museum for the preservation, research and communication of the entire history of mankind. They preserve around five million objects from the fields of European and non-European art, archaeology and ethnology. Its 15 collections are among the most important in Europe and together they enjoy a world-class reputation. These include the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art, which will be on display in the Humboldt Forum in future.
The aim of the sub-project is to design a digitally experienceable "Visitor Journey" through the Universalmuseum - interactive, participatory applications across several buildings that turn a visit to the museum into an overall experience that begins virtually beforehand and can be continued afterwards. This is preceded by user and reception research in the field of digital mediation tools. This makes it possible to develop target group-specific digital offers for museum visits. In order to appeal to as diverse an audience as possible, there should be a low-threshold entry point and a differentiated range of offers. The focus is on personal encounters with the objects, a shared experience of the museum visit based on different prerequisites and a lasting bond with the museum.
As part of "museum4punkt0", a digital system is to be developed that enables links, comparisons or interactions across several collections and takes into account the diversity of objects in a universal museum. It helps visitors find their way around and accompanies the museum experience by providing context and telling stories, for example. In the Humboldt Forum in particular, different narratives about objects will flow into one another. The claim to multi-perspectivity and the aspect of participation play an important role. For this reason, the exhibition module on the South Sea boats will be used as an example to develop digital staging methods that allow for multiple scenarios. The possibilities of involving different visitor groups will also be utilised, whether through thematic hackathons or serious games.
