New in the Humboldt Box: A Chinese art cabinet and new areas for children and young people
Press release from 02/09/2016
The second floor of the Humboldt Box now also provides a foretaste of the future presentation of Far Eastern art at the Humboldt Forum. The Schaudepot, the "Box in the Box", and new interactive applications for children and young people show examples of the new museum formats developed for the Humboldt Forum. Bettina Probst, head of the Humboldt Forum staff unit, and Ching-Ling Wang, curator of ancient Chinese art, present the new modules.

The Schaudepot as a Chinese art cabinet
Where South American dance masks were exhibited until recently, fine Chinese ceramics have now moved in. In China, the "duobaoge" art cabinet, similar to the art chambers in Europe, was used to exhibit curiosities and precious works of art. Taking up this idea, the display depot in the Humboldt Box has been re-equipped in recent days with vessels and scholar's stones that illustrate the diversity of Chinese art. One side of the large display case presents the rather simple, refined taste of the Chinese scholar using various celadon ceramics, while the other side shows courtly taste with colourful porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the accompanying media station, visitors can discover how collections in the Humboldt Forum can be digitally explored.
Invitation to the "Kabuki Battle" - Japan for children and young people
In the neighbouring meeting point, young visitors are invited to take part in the "Kabuki Battle". "Are you a Kabuki talent?" focuses on action and allows children to learn more about this special form of theatre from Japan in a playful way. The second area, "Can you paint pictures with words?", also allows visitors to get active. Inspired by the work of the Chinese artist Xu Bing, a picture can be created from words, printed out and taken home as a souvenir. The aim of the junior areas in the Humboldt Forum is to create incentives for children and families and to playfully address content together. What this could look like in the Humboldt Forum can already be tried out in the Humboldt Box.
The "Workshop Talks" in the Humboldt Box
Since July last year, the workshop talks have been providing an insight into the planning of the Humboldt Forum. They take place on the second Thursday of each month and are free of charge.
At the centre of the workshop talks in the Humboldt Box are the two large models of the second and third floors of the Berlin Palace / Humboldt Forum, which show the future exhibition spaces of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art on a scale of 1:100. These models will be successively equipped with miniatures of the exhibition design and illustrate the planned contents. We would like to take all interested visitors on a tour of the Humboldt Forum and invite them to take a look behind the scenes.
