Medal of Honour of the Royal Numismatic Society for former director of the Berlin Numismatic Collection

The Royal Numismatic Society (London) has awarded Prof. Dr Bernd Kluge, former Director of the Coin Cabinet of the National Museums in Berlin, its Medal of Honour. Andrew Burnett, President of the Royal Numismatic Society and former Director of the Coin Cabinet of the British Museum, presented the medal, created by Ian Rank-Broadley, at the annual meeting in London on 15 December 2015.

Bernd Kluge worked at the Coin Cabinet for 42 years. He was its director from 1992 to 2014. His time in office included the general refurbishment of the Bode Museum with the Numismatic Collection (1998-2006).

Founded in 1836, the Numismatic Society London (since 1904 the Royal Numismatic Society) is the oldest numismatic association in the world and publishes the Numismatic Chronicle, one of the most prominent numismatic journals in the world. Since 1883, it has awarded its Medal of Honour annually to "some person highly distinguished for services to Numismatic Science". The previous German recipients were Theodor Mommsen (1895), Alfred von Sallet (1897), Heinrich Dressel (1908), Max von Bahrfeldt (1912), Kurt Regling (1933), Behrendt Pick (1935), Peter Berghaus (1979), Peter Robert Franke (1988), Maria R.-Alföldi (1995) and Gert and Vera Hatz (2003).
