The prizewinners' concert for the instrumental subjects of cello, percussion and wind chamber music took place on 20 January 2013. The 2013 Mendelssohn Prize winner Constanze von Gutzeit performed Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto as a soloist, accompanied by the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie under the direction of Peter Tilling. Also performing were percussionist Se-Mi Hwang (1st prize) and the ensembles Canorusquintett (1st prize) and 10forBrass (2nd prize) from the wind chamber music category. Katarina Schmidt played the world premiere of this year's commissioned work "Mendelssohn's Seagulls, a song without words for violoncello solo" by Manfred Trojahn, for which the young cellist won the special prize for the best interpretation.
The traditional Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition, which is organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Rectors' Conference of German Music Universities, has been under the patronage of world-famous conductor Kurt Masur since 2013. It was held from 16 to 20 January 2013 in the concert halls of the Berlin University of the Arts. The competition was held this year with a new concept and for the first time under the artistic direction of Dr Dieter Rexroth. It is held in three annually changing instrumental subjects and the subject of composition. In 2014, the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition will take place from 15 to 19 January at the Berlin University of the Arts.
