FELIX MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY UNIVERSITY COMPETITION 2013
Press release from 01/10/2013
From 2013, Kurt Masur will be the patron of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition
Kurt Masur is the patron of this year's new Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition. Through his work and also through his role as President of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Foundation Leipzig, he is uniquely connected to the legacy of the composer, music organiser, conductor and namesake of the competition Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. For years, Kurt Masur has been committed to supporting young musicians, conducting young orchestras and, as President of the International Mendelssohn Academy Leipzig, mentoring scholarship holders in a variety of courses.
In addition to his global career as a conductor - with formative leadership positions at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France - Kurt Masur has gained international recognition above all for his great commitment to social and cultural-political goals. For his great services, he has been honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Westphalian Peace Prize of the City of Münster. He is a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, an honorary citizen of his home town of Brieg and the first winner of the International Mendelssohn Prize in Leipzig.
The traditional Felix Mendelssohn Barholdy University Competition is organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Rectors' Conference of German Music Universities and will take place from 16 to 20 January 2013 in the concert halls of the Berlin University of the Arts. This year, it will be held with a new concept and for the first time under the artistic direction of Dr Dieter Rexroth. The competition will be held in three annually changing instrumental disciplines and composition. Prizes totalling over 50,000 euros will be awarded to the best young talents from German music academies.
