Relaunch of the Museum Island Masterplan website
Press release from 10/30/2012
A new layout and completely revised content: The website www.museumsinsel-berlin.de provides information about the measures of the Museum Island Masterplan and brings the future of the Museum Island to life.
The completely revised website www.museumsinsel-berlin.de is online in time for the opening of the Archaeological Centre on 31 October 2012. Virtual flights and numerous images show what the museum ensemble will look like when all the measures of the Museum Island Masterplan have been completed. The website was developed together with the agency ART+COM GmbH and financed by the Museum Island Board of Trustees. It is based on a virtual 3D model of the Museum Island that was created and regularly updated by the agency in 2001.
All of the website's content has been restructured, fundamentally revised, updated and expanded. Renderings from the 3D model provide views of the future Museum Island that did not previously exist in this form. For example, the James-Simon-Galerie, the future entrance building, can already be viewed today in images, text and a sightseeing flight. The new sub-section on the open spaces also shows views from areas that were previously inaccessible. The homepage picks up on current topics relating to the masterplan and offers visitors different ways of accessing the various areas.
The website is currently being optimised for display on mobile devices so that visitors can also find out about future plans on site. A so-called "responsive design" will ensure that the website is displayed in a user-friendly way on smartphones and tablet PCs. An English-language version of the website is currently being developed.
The Museum Island Masterplan was approved by the Board of Trustees of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in 1999. It envisages restoring the Museum Island, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the same year, and developing it into a museum complex fit for the future. As one of Berlin's main attractions, the Museum Island attracts more than three million visitors every year.
The Museum Island Board of Trustees promotes communicative measures to improve the public perception of the World Heritage Site Museum Island. In 2001, leading international business organisations joined forces to form this body. In this way, the Museum Island Board of Trustees accompanies and supports the further development of this unique World Heritage Site into the future.
