4 July 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. In this document, in 1776, the thirteen British colonies declared their independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.  Independence Day has been celebrated in the United States ever since the very first year. To mark this anniversary, the US is celebrating its national holiday with particular pomp and ceremony this year. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation is taking this 250th anniversary as an opportunity to highlight the diverse connections between the collections of its institutions and the history of America through a multifaceted programme of lectures, discussions, conferences and workshops, as well as through exhibition installations and special presentations. For just as there is no single ‘America’ – but rather ‘Americas’ stretching from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska and Newfoundland, which could scarcely be more different – so too is there no single image of America or a single conception of the USA – even if this is increasingly being conveyed at present.

This programme initiative offers its visitors alternatives; the title ‘We the People’ is intended to be inclusive here: the events are aimed at everyone and invite visitors to broaden their images of the Americas with different stories and perspectives. For that has been, and remains, one of the greatest strengths of the two American continents: creating spaces for diversity, openness to the world and hospitality.
