Thanksgiving - cultural forum invites you to a table in the countryside
Press release from 09/24/2024
After two successful "Days in the Green", the neighbours of the Kulturforum invite you to the Tafel im Grünen on 6 October 2024 and offer an extensive programme. As part of Museum Sunday, all the museums can be visited free of charge from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This year, the Gemäldegalerie, Kupferstichkabinett, Kunstbibliothek, Kunstgewerbemuseum, Neue Nationalgalerie, Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung with the Musikinstrumenten-Museum, Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Stiftung St. Matthäus and the Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung Berlin will once again be taking part under the motto "Harvest Thanksgiving at the Kulturforum". As part of a further co-operation, a collection will be made on site for the "Berliner Tafel" food bank in order to set a sign of community as part of Thanksgiving.
From 10 a.m., all the museums will be open to the public, and there will be dancing, baking, painting, performing, making music and handicrafts inside and outside - and of course eating!
In front of the entrance areas of the museums and the State Library there will be interactive street art, such as salsa, African tango, stilt theatre and a roller disco, as well as food and drink from all over the world. On Matthäikirchplatz, Marisa Benjamim will set up an edible art installation inspired by plein air painting. At 4pm, singer Malonda will perform to mark the naming of the Josephine Baker Garden on the south side of the Nationalgalerie. The Feuerundflamme alliance will be organising a performative baking session from 12 noon to 5 p.m., the results of which will then be served at the large table in the green space under the trees of the tree nursery on Scharounplatz.
At 5 pm, Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth and Berlin's Senator for Culture Joe Chialo will once again open the open-air dining event, followed by jazz and classical violinist Sandro Roy and his Unity Trio playing at the table. The day will conclude at 6 pm with a Thanksgiving service between the fruit trees of the Kulturforum tree nursery with General Superintendent Ulrike Trautwein, Pastor Hannes Langbein and the Bensmann Saxophone Quartet.
Those who are lucky enough to win a raffle can still attend the concert with Paavo Järvi and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at 7 pm. The programme includes works by Veljo Tormis, Dmitri Shostakovich and Anton Bruckner. 10 x 2 free tickets will be raffled off for the concert at 6 pm.
The programme in the individual houses is also wide-ranging: Those interested in the history of the site can discover the historic Tiergarten neighbourhood on a tour with experts from the Art Library. The Picture Gallery offers special guided tours on topics such as "In abundance" and "Growing and thriving", and members of its circle of friends present their favourite works under the motto "Enriching friendship". The Friends of the Museum of Decorative Arts will be presenting the new acquisitions of recent years in short guided tours, while the Museum of Prints and Drawings will be inviting visitors into the autumnal moods of "other" Impressionism. In the Neue Nationalgalerie, there will be one last opportunity to see the special exhibition "Andy Warhol. Velvet Rage and Beauty". In numerous guided tours throughout the day, visitors can also learn more about the links between nature and the art of the Neue Nationalgalerie. At the Staatsbibliothek, the Displayed Words project brings literature and poetry into the public space, Logan February reads his own works and Otis Mensah performs. The WZB will be presenting the fruits of years of research work during Thanksgiving tours through the building on the Landwehr Canal.
There is also a rich programme especially for children and families: the St. Matthäus Foundation will hold a family art service with baker and artist Melina Matzanke at 11.30 am. In the Museum of Decorative Arts, there will be guided tours throughout the day on the theme of "Celebrating festivals" and a drop-in workshop where you can design your own patterns. In the Picture Gallery, visitors of all ages can put together their own still life under the motto "A richly laid table". Anyone who has always wanted to play the barrel organ or try out a theremin can do so on a guided tour of the Musical Instrument Museum. The seventy-minute family tour "Time Travel" through the Philharmonie and Musical Instrument Museum takes place at 1 pm (free tickets at berliner-philharmoniker.de/zeitreise). From 1pm to 5pm, the Berliner Philharmoniker will also be offering short concerts and drop-in formats where you can try out orchestral instruments or build your own instrument.
