Mittdeutscher Verlag launches new publication on the Bauhaus furniture designer Erich Dieckmann to accompany the exhibition

Press release from 02/09/2022

The catalogue designed by Erik Spiekermann offers new research findings and takes a contemporary look at the work of the great designer

Erich Dieckmann's role in National Socialism is also assessed for the first time. Aya Soika writes: "His biography thus represents the first publication on Erich Dieckmann in more than thirty years. The partners of the current exhibition quickly agreed that the catalogue should contain many new insights from historical research, as well as contemporary questions about Dieckmann's work. The volume, designed by Erik Spiekermann and published by Mitteldeutscher Verlag, comprises over 200 pages and offers unique material.

In her contribution, art historian and curator Katja Schneider examines the clients Dieckmann actually worked for and how he became one of the most commercially successful furniture designers of the Weimar Republic. The director of the Museum of Decorative Arts provides a further interesting example of the intertwined histories between Nazi culture and the protagonists of modernism."

There is also a German-German summit meeting of design: Rudolf Horn (92, East) and Stefan Diez (50, West) talk about their famous colleague in an interview with Manon Bursian and Ingolf Kern.

The volume is rounded off by the furniture project "Between the Chairs" by students at Burg Giebichenstein, who have followed in Dieckmann's footsteps and asked whether the answers of the 1920s are still relevant today.
