Provenance Research Day at the SPK

Press release from 04/07/2020

The second International Day of Provenance Research will take place on 8 April 2020. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin have prepared numerous online contributions to provide an insight into the work of provenance researchers. Unfortunately, the planned events have had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Researchers from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin are presenting their investigations and findings in the "Biographies of Objects" series on the museums' blog. The topics range from chequered careers during the Nazi era to unusual friendships in the German colonial empire and a window into the past of the North American Omaha people. The Provenance Research Team Dahlem will provide insights into ongoing research and report on projects and activities on its new Twitter account @PPR_Dahlem.

The provenance researchers at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin explain the challenges of working with books and other library collection items on the Staatsbibliothek's blog. Interesting cases are also presented, such as Artur Rubinstein's private library, the unsolved mystery surrounding the person "Heinrich Stahl" and what the entry "old holdings" in accession books means.

The final documentation of the German-American exchange programme for museum experts (Provenance Research Exchange Program - PREP) will be published on the SPK website, providing an overview of important resources in archives and museums in Germany and the USA for provenance research on Nazi-looted art.
