Konzerthausorchester Berlin at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition 2018 - advance ticket sales start
Press release from 12/05/2017
The concerts of the competition, which will be held in the piano and composition categories in 2018, will take place on 20 and 21 January 2018. The prizewinners will perform with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the direction of Corinna Niemeyer at the end of the competition.
Around 60 students from 20 music academies have qualified in internal pre-selections to take part in the most traditional German classical music competition for young talent in the fields of piano and composition from 17 to 21 January 2018. They will be competing for the coveted awards and prize money totalling over 20,000 euros.
The participants present their skills to juries made up of international experts. In the piano category, for example, the renowned pianist Lilya Zilberstein will chair the jury. In the composition category, the composer and conductor Christian Jost will chair the jury. His operas and orchestral works are performed worldwide. Sebastian Nordmann, artistic director of the Konzerthaus Berlin, has been artistic director of the competition since spring 2016. The patron of the competition is the designated Gewandhauskapellmeister Andris Nelsons. The competition is jointly organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Rectors' Conference of German Music Universities and the Berlin University of the Arts.
The public auditions will take place at the Berlin University of the Arts from 17 to 19 January 2018. Admission is free and the four best participants in the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Piano Competition will perform on 20 January in the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus Berlin with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the direction of Corinna Niemeyer. The participants were able to choose in advance whether they would play the Piano Concerto No. 1 op. 25 or the Piano Concerto No. 2 op. 40 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in this concert.
The students of both subjects, who have been awarded first prize, will perform on 21 January 2018 in the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts in Hardenbergstraße. The programme includes works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the world premiere of the work "Études de dessin" for solo piano by Kit Armstrong, which was composed for the competition, and at least one world premiere of a work that won a prize in the composition category. The Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the direction of Corinna Niemeyer has also been engaged for this concert.
Information on the competition, the concerts, the juries, all participants and the prizes can be found at www.fmbhw.de.
