A differentiated view of Iranian modernity
Press release from 03/01/2017
Within just a few years, modern art in Iran in the 1960s and 1970s achieved a rich development. Its protagonists were caught in a tense relationship between connecting with international developments and drawing on centuries-old traditions. On 11 March 2017, at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut and the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, experts will discuss Iranian modern art at an international conference.
Under the title "Iran and Modern Art", international contemporary witnesses will report on the development of the Iranian and Western collection at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA) and its mission as a leading institution for contemporary art. In addition to the cultural climate in Iran in the 1960s and 1970s, the conference will shed light on the current relationship between Islamic and modern art as well as cultural clichés that still characterise Iranian art today. In addition, the reader on Iranian modernism published by the National Gallery will be presented.
