Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition 2016 starts
Press release from 01/05/2016
On 13 January 2016, the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition in this year's piano, trombone and string quartet categories will begin at Berlin University of the Arts. They are open to the public and admission is free.
In the Mendelssohn piano category, the German Pianist Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros
, will also be awarded in 2016 for the best interpretation of Brahms
arrangement for the left hand of the Bach Chaconne in D minor. In the
trombone category, the competition has a separate programme for
tenor trombone and for jazz trombone. Furthermore,
young string quartets will compete against each other.
Outstanding interpretations of works are expected, from Haydn and
Mendelssohn to Nino Rota, Jiggs Whigham, own arrangements
and commissioned compositions in each competition category.
The three concerts in which the winners will be announced
and honoured will take place from 15 to 17 January 2016. The
final concert will be broadcast live online at
by the UdK Berlin label betont.
In 2016, the organisers of the competition, the Prussian
Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Rectors' Conference of German Music Universities and
the Berlin University of the Arts, are mourning the loss of its recently deceased
patron Kurt Masur. Hardly any other conductor was as committed to the
work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as he was. Masur's personality
is associated with the highest level of artistic expertise as well as
social responsibility, including his commitment to the next generation of musicians
.
You can find detailed information about the competition, the concerts, the jury, all participants, the
