Berlin: City of the Future - City of Knowledge Discussion event in the Year of Science 2015 - City of the Future
Press release from 10/20/2015
With its numerous scientific and cultural institutions, Berlin sets the standard for new developments in the digital world. Modern information and communication technologies, embedded systems and the "Internet of Things" are opening up new opportunities for Berlin as a "city of the future". As part of the event "Berlin: City of the Future - City of Knowledge", experts will discuss the digital perspectives for Berlin on 26 October 2015 from 1 p.m. at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities at Gendarmenmarkt. The joint event organised by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities is being held as part of the Year of Science 2015 - City of the Future.
Digital development concepts for the "Smart City" show how cities can become more efficient, progressive and healthy in areas such as mobility, energy, transport, construction and health. Digital networking is already often a reality in Berlin, especially in culture and science. Digitalisation is playing an increasingly important role here. With the emergence of new places of knowledge production, the forms of communication are also changing towards more participation. The Humboldt Forum is currently being built on Schlossplatz. How knowledge about other cultures can be communicated in new ways and how visitors, academics and the societies of origin can be equally involved is a key question of the new concept.
What opportunities and challenges do digital concepts present for Berlin's urban development? What new forms of discourse can emerge in networked metropolises between society, politics, media and science? What will the new "places of knowledge" look like?
These and other questions will be explored by experts from science and culture in keynote speeches and talks and discussed together with visitors. The winners of the "Future City Berlin" photo competition will also be honoured at the event.
The event is part of the Science Year 2015 - City of the Future and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
