Deutsche Post's "Nefertiti" and "Ishtar Gate" special stamps to be presented at the Neues Museum today
Press release from 01/28/2013
The two special postage stamps "Nefertiti" and "Ishtar Gate" were issued at the beginning of the year as part of Deutsche Post's "Treasures from German museums" series. They show two outstanding archaeological objects from the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection and the Museum of the Ancient Near East of the National Museums in Berlin Prussian Cultural Heritage respectively.
The President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hermann Parzinger, and the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance, Hartmut Koschyk, MdB, will present the two special stamps today at an event in the Greek Courtyard of the Neues Museum.
Hermann Parzinger said: "We are delighted that the Federal Ministry of Finance and Deutsche Post have decided to honour these two special treasures from our collections with a special stamp each. This is a remarkable gesture, especially in light of the current exhibition on Nefertiti in the Neues Museum and the 100th anniversary of her discovery."
The winning designs for the two special-issue stamps "Nefertiti" and "Ishtar Gate" were created by Stefan Klein and Olaf Neumann, Iserlohn. They and other design proposals were published in the magazine "postfrisch. Das Philatelie-Journal", published by Deutsche Post.
The exhibition "In the light of Amarna. 100 years of the discovery of Nefertiti" can be seen until 13 April 2013 at the Neues Museum on Berlin's Museum Island. The bust of Nefertiti is on permanent display in the North Dome Hall of the Neues Museum. The Ishtar Gate can be seen in the south wing of the Pergamon Museum.
