New Yearbook of Prussian Cultural Heritage published
Press release from 12/19/2011
Volume 46 of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Yearbook documents the successful work and high-profile activities of the Foundation and its five institutions in 2010, focussing on the areas of building, exhibitions, research, acquisitions and cooperation.
The Kolonnadenhof was ceremoniously reopened as part of the tenth anniversary of the Museum Island's inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The remodelled Kaisersaal in the Museum of Photography has been presenting temporary exhibitions since 2010, including the extensive photography collection of the Art Library. The Collection of Classical Antiquities of the National Museums in Berlin moved its new permanent exhibition to the Altes Museum.
An article on the Mshatta façade in the Museum of Islamic Art traces the ongoing professional discussion about its optimal museum presentation and reception since its acquisition. Current considerations regarding the remodelling of the Pergamon Museum are also outlined. A further article presents the sources available in Berlin on the discovery and division of the bust of Nefertiti in 1912/13.
The research work of the Secret State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage is illustrated by the cataloguing and editing project of Schinkel's files from his time in the Prussian building administration. An article on the acquisition consortium for the Albert Figdor Collection provides insights into the art trade of the interwar years.
The State Library continued its acquisition of important publishing archives and thus offers a broad field for research into the publishing industry in Germany. It also expanded the holdings of the Oriental Department with the purchase of a collection of Islamic manuscripts. The Nationalgalerie der Staatlichen Museen was able to acquire the painting "Evening over Potsdam" by Lotte Laserstein.
For the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation as a globally significant cultural and academic institution, the intensification of its own research activities and the diverse networking with national and international partners are central tasks. An article on the role of the SPK as a research institution presents the academic activities and wide-ranging co-operations of the Foundation and its institutions. The SPK's academic events in 2010 are listed in the chronicle. The Ibero-American Institute uses the example of the "desiguALdades.net" competence network to present its research on the Latin American world and the intensive academic exchange with this region.
The major German Digital Library project, in which the SPK, as the lead partner in a national competence network, is working on issues relating to the technical implementation and virtual processing of digitised holdings from German cultural institutions, is also presented, as is the conceptual development of the Humboldt Forum, which opens up new forms of intercultural dialogue. The volume contains an interim report on the EU twinning project with the Georgian National Museum. It is the first European project of its kind in the cultural sector and is being realised by the SPK. An article entitled "Kulturgüter auf Abwegen" ("Cultural assets on the wrong track") highlights the need to establish and further develop international agreements when dealing with collections from foreign cultures or of unknown provenance. Various approaches to the worldwide protection of cultural property, which the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation also supports and promotes, are presented.
The yearbook is published in a modernised layout and incorporates the new logo, which has been used since June 2011 as the first result of a brand development process to present the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and its institutions in their entirety.
