New museum honoured with European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage
Press release from 04/16/2010
The prestigious "Europa Nostra Award", which recognises outstanding achievements in the field of restoration, research and education, will be presented to the Neues Museum this year. The building on Berlin's Museum Island has been restored according to plans by David Chipperfield Architects and Julian Harrap. Since its opening in October 2009, it has attracted well over half a million visitors from near and far after seventy years of inaccessibility and massive war damage. Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, says: "We are delighted. This prestigious award for the preservation of the common European cultural heritage recognises the excellent achievements of David Chipperfield and his team and shows how beneficial the good cooperation between the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the heritage conservation bodies is."
Hermann Parzinger will receive the award from Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Denis de Kergorlay, Executive President of Europa Nostra, at a ceremony in Istanbul on 10 June 2010.
The 29 winners from 15 countries were selected from almost 140 projects submitted by independent experts from all over Europe. The Neues Museum received the prize in the "Conservation" category. One of the aims of the prize is to promote cross-border exchange and encourage exemplary achievements in the field of cultural heritage conservation.
