Special prize for the "Architekturpreis Berlin 2009" for the Neues Museum
Press release from 11/03/2009
On 30 October 2009, David Chipperfield Architects and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation were awarded the special prize for the Berlin Architecture Prize 2009 for the restoration of the Neues Museum on Berlin's Museum Island.
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, says: "We are delighted that the success story of the Neues Museum is being continued. After the BDA Prize Berlin, this is a further honour for the architecture of the building. This is also reflected in the extremely positive public response. More than 55,000 visitors have viewed the museum since it opened a fortnight ago. That is a great success."
The jury's statement included the following: "Quite in the spirit of Stüler, David Chipperfield establishes an unprecedented relationship between exhibit and building via the commonality of injury."
The "Architekturpreis Berlin e.V." honours pioneering and innovative buildings every three years. The prize is awarded jointly to the architect and client. From 3 to 18 November 2009, the works submitted will be presented in an exhibition at the Internationale Bauakademie Berlin.
The Neues Museum has been open to the public since 17 October 2009. Time slot tickets to visit the building, which is home to the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, can be booked online.
