The Humboldt Forum in the palace: Coming to the world differently. A workshop view
Press release from 06/10/2009
Exhibition at the Altes Museum, Museum Island Berlin, from 9 July 2009 to 17 January 2010 Press conference: Wed 8 July 2009, 11 a.m. Opening: Wed 8 July 2009, evening
For the first time, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin, as partners and future stakeholders of the Humboldt Forum, are presenting their joint guiding ideas in the form of a workshop overview with the exhibition The Humboldt Forum in the Palace: A Different Approach to the World.
The Humboldt Forum, which will be located in the rebuilt Berlin City Palace opposite Museum Island, is dedicated to bringing together the cultures of the world. In Berlin's historic centre, the creative interplay of collections, research activities and media holdings of the three partners will create a dynamic place of world cultures. The exhibition in the Altes Museum presents concepts, ideas and methods that will be applied in the Humboldt Forum without anticipating later content in a condensed form. Numerous exhibits from all over the world illustrate the continuous transformation of cultures, art and science. The exhibition focuses on three major themes: starting with the Kunstkammer, the history of collecting and handling mostly non-European objects in Berlin, the interpretation of museum exhibits from different perspectives and the relevance of current research, technologies and educational programmes of the three participating institutions for the Humboldt Forum.
As part of the Museum Island Festival, a series of events in the Lustgarten will take up the content and themes of the exhibition and arouse the public's curiosity. In this way, visitors will not only gain a differentiated insight into the possibilities and opportunities of future activities on the Schlossplatz during their tour of the exhibition, but also before they reach the Altes Museum.
