Cultural Education
Numerous people from Germany and abroad visit and use the Foundation’s museums, libraries, and archives. Its offerings to impart culture and fulfill its task of educating are correspondingly broad.
Via numerous events, exhibitions, and publications, the institutions of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) impart their collections and subjects to the public. Their offerings are directed primarily at children and teenagers but also at adults of different backgrounds and interests. The Foundation’s museums in particular are places to learn about culture. They offer extensive educational programs.
A Broad Range of Offerings for Adults and Children
Exhibitions present their subject matter and research results in a way that speaks to a broad audience. The Foundation’s educational offerings include tours, concerts, readings, and public conferences. In addition, the Foundation’s institutions participate in events such as the Lange Nacht der Museen (Long Night of Museums), the Lange Nacht der Bibliotheken (Long Night of Libraries), and the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (Long Night of the Sciences).
For children of preschool age and above and for teenagers, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin) and das Musikinstrumenten-Museum (Museum of Musical Instruments) of the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung (State Institute for Music Research) offer numerous special tours, programs, and participatory events. For adults, there are regular introductions and a variety of opportunities for continuing education such as training in library and archival research.
Places of Integration
Cultural institutions are also places of integration. In particularly, the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art) and the Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin offer diverse programs for people of different cultural backgrounds. The Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (Ibero-American Institute) offers readings, concerts, films, and exhibitions that convey aspects of life in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula.
The future Humboldt-Forum will place particular focus on imparting information about non-European cultures and on their participation in preparing exhibitions and other educational programs. The goal of the presentation of the collections will be to increase understanding of societies and cultures under globalization.
Internet Offerings Reach New Audiences
Increasingly, the Foundation and its institutions are present on the Internet with various offerings. Several institutions are represented on Facebook, use Twitter, and have their own YouTube channel. An app for the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) presents the outstanding treasures of the institution. Museum exhibitions are increasingly accompanied by interactive offerings. The goal is to make it possible to engage with the content of the exhibitions even from outside the museum spaces. Finally, various Internet portals of the Foundation and its institutions provide access to digitized holdings and hence a virtual look at their extensive collections.
