museum4punkt0 – Digital Strategies for the Museum of the Future
The joint project “museum4punkt0” bundles research into the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation in museums. Model applications are developed and subsequently made available to cultural institutions all over Germany.
In cooperation with five partners, the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) is trying out a variety of scenarios for using digital technologies in museums. The focus lies on the areas of mediation, communication, interaction, inclusion, and participation. At the same time, museum4punkt0 is investigating the demands made on digital infrastructures as well as aspects of data repository and standardization. The project will thus make a valuable contribution to strengthening the digital infrastructures of Germany's museum landscape.
Partners and Structure of the Joint Project
Six institutions are taking part in the project under the leadership of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz: the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin), the Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss, the Deutsches Auswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) in Bremerhaven, the Deutsche Museum – Masterpieces of Science and Technologie in Munich, the Fastnacht (carnival) museums of Schloss Langenstein and Narrenschopf Bad Dürrheim with other museums of the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht, and the Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde (natural history) in Görlitz. The Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media has awarded a grant of 15 million Euros to fund museum4punkt0.
The institutions involved in museum4punkt0 reflect the wide spectrum of museums in Germany. Together they are looking for new ways to enter into dialogue with their visitors, develop personalized offers for them, and address additional target groups. Each institutional partner will carry out a model subproject independently. In each case, the approaches that they develop will centre on questions specific to the collection of the museum concerned, but also take the other partners' projects into account.
Added Value for Germany's Museum Landscape
The aim, in the course of museum4punkt0, is to develop prototypes and create resources that also benefit other museums in Germany. In developing the various applications, care will therefore always be taken to make them accessible and versatile enough for use in different scenarios. In addition, the project partners are jointly preparing standards and guidelines for future projects. The results will be presented on a joint platform, which will go online in the course of 2017 and will be expanded step by step.
