Dossier Humboldt Forum

How can you present the universal themes and global developments of the human race in a museum? That and nothing less is the task of the Humboldt Forum, which is currently under construction in the heart of Berlin. The backbone of the mammoth project: the non-European collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin).

Alexander von Humboldt's life's work was guided by a vision: the idea of a holistic view of the world. That is exactly what visitors to the reconstructed Berlin City Palace, now renamed after the famous explorer, will be able to experience, beginning in 2020. What's more, the Humboldt Forum will complement the Museumsinsel (Museum Island) in such a way that the world's artistic and cultural history can be experienced in one place: the historic center of Berlin. The collections of the Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum) will occupy two-thirds of the exhibition area in Germany's most ambitious cultural undertaking to date. So, what is it going to look like? What can we learn from objects that have been brought here from all over the world? And what is so special about the Humboldt Forum? The dossier offers answers to these and other questions.
