Köpenick

In the Treptow-Köpenick District of Berlin, there is an annex of the Kunstgewerbemuseum. The central storage location for the Foundation’s institutions is being built there as well.

Schloss Köpenick: The Annex of the Kunstgewerbemuseum

Schloss Köpenick (Köpenick Palace) was used from 1963 onward by the Staatliche Museen in East Berlin for that part of the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) that remained in the eastern part of the city. Today the Baroque palace on the water is the property of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). After ten years of renovation, it was reopened in 2004 as an annex of the Kunstgewerbemuseum at the Kulturforum. It presents Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo interior design.

Friedrichshagen: The Storage Location for All the Institutions

In the Friedrichshagen section of Köpenick, the central storage location for the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz is being created. The Foundation’s existing storage facilities will reach their capacity in the foreseeable future.

The Foundation is building new storage spaces on a property belonging to the German government on the Fürstenwalder Damm / Müggelseedamm. They will offer sufficient space for the long term as well as modern technology. Relocating holdings in storage and workshops has several advantages: It will free up desirable locations in the center of the city for the institutions to use in other ways, benefit from the synergy of competency of specialists, and reduce operating costs.

Speichermagazin Friedrichshagen

The Speichermagazin Friedrichshagen (Storage Warehouse Friedrichshagen) was put into operation in summer 2014 as the first building on the new location. The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library), the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (Ibero-American Institute), and the bpk-Bildagentur für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte (bpk Photo Agency – Fine Art. Culture, History) share this storage building. It was constructed based on plans by Eberhard Wimmer Architekten, München.

Wimmer has designed the building as a structure of reinforced concrete topped by a flat roof with greenery and a facade of prefabricated concrete and natural stone elements. In the storage areas, there are four glass-covered light wells. The high-technology building is designed especially for the storage of delicate cultural assets.  It will provide room for six million books, In addition, the storage warehouse offers space for several special archives such as the Staatsbibliothek’s master film archive, and is provided with a photography workshop. Two further phases of construction can double the warehouse’s floor area and storage capacity in the future.

Central Storage Facility of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Various storage facilities and workshops belonging to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin) will be brought together in a second building right next to the Speichermagazin in Friedrichshagen. Construction for the new central storage building will take place in two phases. They will begin as soon as financing has been obtained.
