Construction work begins on the Nationalgalerie's Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum
Press release from 11/18/2020
Work is currently starting on site for the Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum. The Haus der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin is being built according to plans by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
Several measures are necessary to prepare the area for the construction work. The southbound lanes of Potsdamer Straße will be moved to the grassed central reservation. Instead of the cycle path, a cycle lane will be installed on the carriageway and a so-called pergola will be created for pedestrians along the construction fence. The pedestrian traffic lights in front of the State Library will be moved around 50 metres in the direction of Potsdamer Platz. The "Kulturforum" bus stop on lines M48 and M85 (in the direction of Zehlendorf and Lichterfelde Süd) will be out of service from January due to the construction work.
As soon as the site has been prepared and the construction containers have been set up, work will begin on digging the excavation pit. The relevant civil engineering company has now been contracted.
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, says: "This year has been characterised by intensive planning work and approval procedures. I am delighted that things are now really getting underway on site and construction work can begin."
The new building is being constructed on the previously undeveloped site between Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie and Hans Scharoun's Philharmonie. In future, art collections from the Nationalgalerie from the 20th century will be exhibited there, in dialogue with the Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch Collection and the Erich Marx Collection, supplemented by presentations from the Art Library and the Museum of Prints and Drawings of the National Museums in Berlin. In addition to around 9,000 square metres of exhibition space, there will also be areas for education and communication, catering, restoration, depots, foyers and two boulevards.
