Museumsinsel (Museum Island) in Berlin will soon have another major attraction. In the future, the James-Simon-Galerie designed by David Chipperfield will welcome guests to the Museumsinsel. Chancellor Angela Merkel will officially open the new house in a ceremony on July 12, 2019. Everyone is invited to the opening day event of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin) on July 13.

Michael Eissenhauer, Director General of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin: “With the James-Simon-Galerie serving as the central entrance and service building as of this summer, our visitors will have the historic opportunity to discover and experience Berlin’s Museumsinsel and the major world-class collections in the heart of Berlin in a completely new way.”

Hermann Parzinger, President of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, said: “Opening the James-Simon-Galerie is a major step in preparing this unique museum ensemble for the 21st century. We are also honoring the great patron of the arts, James Simon, after whom the building is named, for his work for both the museums and Berlin.”
