Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library)
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek networks the digital offerings of German museums, libraries, archives, and research institutes. It provides free access to cultural and scientific heritage via the Internet.
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library, DDB) is working on making the holdings of around thirty thousand cultural and scientific institutions in Germany available online at no charge. To that end, the digital offerings of museums, libraries, archives, research institutes, mediatheques, historical preservation institutions, and photo archives will be connected. Millions of books, archival materials, pictures, sculptures, pieces of music and sound documents, films, and notes will be accessible via a central portal.
In November 2012, a beta version of the online portal was launched. Since then users have already been able to search and view several million digitized objects. New data sets are being added constantly. The platform for the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek will be continually updated with new user functionality.
The DDB is also Germany’s contribution to the European digital platform Europeana. Since 2008, Europeana has been compiling digitized cultural assets from all the Member States of the EU. Its goal is to create in this way a European cultural memory.
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek was founded in 2009. It is financed jointly by the federal government, the States and the Communes of Germany. The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek is the responsibility of a competence network in which various public cultural and scientific institutions participate. The Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz is one of them.
The digitization of their holdings has long since been a core task of the Foundation and its institutions. The Office of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek has therefore been located at the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz since August 2011. The Foundation’s President, Hermann Parzinger, is the spokesman for the competence network’s board.
